:: MEDICAL EXPENSES


Cumberland's Medical Expenses policy works on the following basis:

  • On commencement of the programme each person insured will be issued with a Cumberland "identity card".
  • When an insured person needs medical treatment they would, in normal circumstances, visit their doctor who would decide on an appropriate course of treatment.
  • If the relevant ailment is of a minor nature for example, headache, stomach upset and the like, requiring only prescribed medicines etc. then such costs will be borne by the Insured Person.
  • If the Insured Person is referred by the doctor for laboratory tests such as, blood, allergy and the like, then these costs, including the initial Doctors bill, will be reimbursed along with costs incurred for subsequent treatment, provided the medical condition is not excluded
  • If, subsequently, the Insured Person's condition warrants referral to a specialist, such specialist's costs will be reimbursed, provided that the medical condition is not excluded.
  • If hospital "In-Patient" treatment is prescribed then the Insured person presents themselves to the Cumberland Nurse Delegate at one of our Approved Hospitals (full list of hospitals attached). She will then supervise the patient's admission and subsequently monitor the on-going treatment on a daily basis until discharge.
  • On completion of the treatment the hospital will directly bill Cumberland for all the costs incurred, these having been pre-approved by our Nurse-Delegate.


The Cumberland card will allow the Insured Person;

  • In-Patient treatment at Cumberland approved hospitals
  • Out-Patient treatment (if your client decides to select that benefit) for laboratory tests, x-rays and the like. If Out-Patient cover is selected, there is an annual financial limit of US$2,000 imposed for this cover.

We have our own Delegates at all the major hospitals in Greater Beirut during normal office hours (outside these hours we have a hot line on which the hospitals may contact us at any time). These Delegates are on-hand to complete registration formalities at the hospitals for each patient admitted and to give immediate approval for treatment, thus preventing any unnecessary delay. If there appears to be any doubt about the appropriateness of the recommended treatment, the Delegate will contact our own in-house doctor for immediate approval - some companies do not inform the insured that treatment is not covered until the time that the account is due for settlement. Our policy is one of pro-active treatment management so that if a particular treatment is not provided for under the policy, immediate notification will be given to the Insured Person and your client and the situation managed in the best overall interests.


All treatment costs that are covered under the policy will be billed to us directly for settlement.
